Class Description:
Abshalom Jac Lahav is a conceptual painter who explores issues of identity. His work suggests an ambition to both keep the past alive and explore issues pertinent to the contemporary Jewish experience. He uses his paintbrush to represent Jews who live in the Diaspora, a self-conscious concealment of his Israeli pedigree. His artistic process is to continually repaint, add, and discard his portraits, thereby preventing closure or completeness. Lahav’s painting offers us insight into the limits and boundlessness of humanity.
Lahav’s portrait series, 48 Jews, responds to Andy Warhol’s earlier Ten Portraits of Jews of the Twentieth Century (1980) but is also informed by Gerhard Richter's 48 Portraits (1972). Lahav employs a playful wit and analytical insight, gathering images from contemporary media sources and selecting them for their iconic quality.
