Location: Harold Schnitzer Family Program in Judaic Studies at PSU Neuberger 491H Portland State University 1825 SW Broadway Portland, OR Class Description: Sitting with Scorners: Early Jewish and Christian Responses to Sport and Spectacle a research talk by Loren Spielman Loren Spielman is completing his PhD at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, and is currently visiting instructor at Wesleyan University where he is teaching courses on Hebrew Bible, rabbinic literature, and Jewish Leisure in antiquity, the last a course based on his dissertation research. His dissertation, entitled “Concilium Vanitatis: Roman Spectacle Entertainment and the Jews from the Herodian Period through the Muslim Conquest,” is a broad historical overview of Jewish attitudes towards athletic competitions, theatrical performances, gladiatorial bouts, beast hunts, staged executions, and horse races from 40 BCE to the 7th century CE. He has shared his life story with 560 audiences in universities, colleges, schools, churches, synagogues, prisons and book clubs, in the State of Oregon and Washington. He was also interviewed by radio and TV stations as well as the Oregonian and other newspapers. Mr. Wiener’s autobiography “From A Name to A Number” was published in April 2007. Last May Wiener received an Honorary Law Degree from Lewis & Clark Law School. His story is a testimony to an unfolding tragedy taking place in WWII.
