Class Description:
Almonds and Raisins explores the many Yiddish-language films made in the United States and Europe between the release of The Jazz Singer in 1927 and the outbreak of World War II.

Directed by David Elstein and Russ Karel and narrated by none other than Orson Wells, this English-language documentary consists of moving, and sometimes hilarious, clips drawn from the over 300 Yiddish films produced between 1927 and 1939. Inspiring interviews from surviving actors and directors round out a compelling visual and oral history of this too-brief epoch in Jewish film.

“A feeling film as well as an intelligent one, a documentary that captures, in a rough-cut, unsentimental manner, the idea and the history of these movies, which are now, in themselves, important documents of American and Jewish immigrant history.”
– Richard Shepard, New York Times

One of the top 15 Jewish films of all time.
– Film Critic Kathryn Bernheimer
