Class Description:
Taught by Sylvia Frankel

In this five-week class, we will attempt to discover how American Jews perceive and relate to Israel. Is Israel a spiritual place, or a geographical place? Where do American Jews stand in regard to that space today? We will briefly address the concepts of exile and Diaspora and explore their meanings.
Week one: American Jews and the early Zionist movement.
Week two: The years following World War II, preceding Israel’s 1948 Declaration of Independence.
Week three: The years immediately following Israel’s Independence.
Week four: The Six Day War and its aftermath.
Week five: The gradual distancing today between American Jews and Israel. Do American Jews feel less connected to the Jewish State? If so, why?
