Jewish Women's Drumming Class

05/27/2010 - 6:00pm to 05/27/2010 - 7:00pm

Location:
Congregation Beth Israel
Congregation Beth Israel
1972 NW Glisan
Portland, OR

Class Description:
In this multi-generational beginning djembe class, students will learn
polyrhythmic African beats as well as djembe technique. Students will
also become comfortable with creating their own rhythms, adding to a
drum circle, and beginning solo methods. The class will create a
women-only space in which we can explore parts of ourselves that
mainstream society does not usually encourage or deem "feminine" (such
as being loud, aggressive, or musical). The class will also focus on
some of the ways rhythm can be used in Jewish spirituality, tradition,
and meditation. Drums may be available for rental upon request.
Minimum of 4 students required.

Instructor Biography:
Julie Lipson graduated from University of Maryland with degrees in
Women's Studies and Ethnomusicology. She learned to play the djembe
first when she traveled to Ghana after high school, later in college
under the instruction of Dialis Djimo and Amadou Kouyate, and through
her work with the Young Women's Drumming Empowerment Project in
Washington, DC. Julie works at Beth Israel where she plays music for
Shabbat services and teaches children's Rhythm and Movement classes.
