Using a variety of texts and other media, we will trace the evolution of the complex interaction between Jews and Muslims beginning with Muhammad’s relations with Jewish tribes in Arabia. We will then explore everyday Jewish life under Islamic rule during the period 850-1200 CE. The rise and decline of the Ottoman Empire, encounters with European imperialism, and roots of the Arab-Israeli conflict will conclude the historical survey.
