Class Description:
Charlie Schiffman, former executive VP of the Jewish Federation of Greater Portland will introduce the film at 7 p.m. Following the film, Professor Robert Liebman of Portland State University will lead a discussion of the issues the film raises.

Film: The piece portrays the thrilling history of the young soldiers who carried the future of a people on their shoulders as they fought Nazis, rescued refugees, and went on to lead the fledgling IDF to victory in 1948.

Jews and non-Jews alike have found inspiration in the unique and little-known tale of this Jewish fighting brigade which masterminded key operations in the final weeks of WWII and were instrumental in the 1948 victory in the War of Independence. Formed by Churchill at the very end of WWII, the brigade assassinated hidden Nazi officers and helped holocaust survivors to enter then Palestine illegally. Through their participation in the brigade, these young men gained training, experience, and even equipment that was vital in 1948.

This documentary also invites comparison to the recent fictional Quentin Tarantino film Inglorious Basterds (2009) as both examine Jews who fought Nazis during World War II and explore the impact a small committed group can have, even against great odds.

Proceeds from the event will support scholarships and subsidies for Melton students who want to continue the tradition of Jewish study even in these tough economic times.
