a research talk by Loren Spielman
Loren Spielman is completing his PhD at the Jewish Theological Seminary of America, and is currently visiting instructor at Wesleyan University where he is teaching courses on Hebrew Bible, rabbinic literature, and Jewish Leisure in antiquity, the last a course based on his dissertation research. His dissertation, entitled “Concilium Vanitatis: Roman Spectacle Entertainment and the Jews from the Herodian Period through the Muslim Conquest,” is a broad historical overview of Jewish attitudes towards athletic competitions, theatrical performances, gladiatorial bouts, beast hunts, staged executions, and horse races from 40 BCE to the 7th century CE.
