Class Description:
We are thrilled to have Akiva Tor, Consul General of Israel for the Pacific Northwest region, join us on Sunday, April 25 at 12:00 noon. The title of his talk is, Middle East Peacemaking, the Iranian Nuclear Crisis and US– Israel Relations.
The Middle East peace process, so promising at is inception with the signing of the Oslo Accords seventeen years ago, has not yet delivered the desired peace dividend. What are the current obstacles and what steps are required for the achievement an Israel–Palestinian peace agreement and the achievement of peace treaties between Israel and other Arab states? How does the threat of a fast nuclearizing Iran play in to this dynamic, and what is the required role of the US – Israel relationship, and the relationship of Israel and American Jewry, for the advance of peace in the region.
Consul General Tor has served as World Jewish Affairs Adviser to the President of Israel, Director of the Israel Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei, and as Deputy Director for Palestinian Affairs in the Israel Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He has written and lectured extensively on Jewish values in the foreign policy of Israel and on ethical considerations in international relations.
