Class Description:
Talk and Reading by Joanne Greenberg
Author of I Never Promised You A Rose Garden and Miri Who Charms
From The Greeenwood Encyclopedia of Multiethnic American Literature (2005): “Although Greenberg’s writing career began with a historical novel about the twelfth-century York massacre of Jews (1963), she is best known for an autobiographical novel about a teenage girl’s struggle with mental illness. Published in 1964 under the pseudonym Hannah Green, I Never Promised You a Rose Garden has been in print since then, and was re-published with a new afterword by the author in 2004. Greenberg has published ten novels and four collections of short stories. Formally inventive, satisfying on the level of story and character, deeply moral, politically aware but with an active distrust of political agendas, Greenberg’s fiction often features Jewish characters and topics; Greenberg has aptly characterized herself as not an ‘Orthodox’ but a ‘paradox’ Jew.”
