Class Description:
PSU professor Natan Meir is the resident scholar for this year’s Weekend in Quest, which will take place in Astoria . The theme of the weekend is "The Lives of Our Mothers and Fathers in Eastern Europe."

A weekend of study and worship with Professor Natan Meir, Rabbi Joshua Stampfer and Rabbi Ariel Stone. We will gather on the beautiful Oregon coast for a two and a half day retreat that
will include Shabbat observance, kosher meals, stimulating lectures and discussions, and an evening of entertainment and camaraderie. The study will cover geographical, religious and cultural influences on and by the Jews of Eastern Europe.

Natan Meir was born in Jerusalem and raised in New Jersey and Quebec. He received his Ph.D in Jewish history from Columbia University in 2003, taught at the University of Southampton (U.K.) from 2004 to 2008, and was a Yad Hanadiv postdoctoral fellow at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in academic year 2007-08. He is now the Lorry I. Lokey Assistant Professor of Judaic Studies at Portland State University. His scholarly interest is modern Jewish history, focusing on the social and cultural history of East European Jewry in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His first book, Kiev: Jewish Metropolis, 1861-1914, is forthcoming from Indiana University Press.
